KEY SKILLS

Information Technology
(For further details of my Information Technology skills please see the screenshots of a selection of my work by clicking here).
Microsoft Visual Basic
I am experienced in the research and development of software to a commercial standard using Microsoft Visual Basic. Within the application we are currently working on I have been responsible for a number of DLLs all linked by one central EXE. The Visual Basic classes use a number of additional technologies such as XML, DHTML, Structured Storage and COM. The finished application will be suitable to operate as a stand-alone desktop application or as an Internet based product working from a central server.

Microsoft Visual C++
I have written a Pluggable Protocol COM object using Visual C++ which links Microsoft Internet Explorer and our Software Team's custom DLLs. This allows the Internet Explorer interface to communicate with the business layers written using Visual Basic. I have also developed an Internet Training Site for database programming in Visual C++.

Internet
I am experienced in all aspects of HTML and the use of the DHTML Document Object Model to display information. I am also comfortable coding using either JavaScript or VBScript. In addition to this, within our current application, all data is stored using XML and then transformed to HTML using XSL.

General Software Development
I am experienced in using the UML Software Package 'Rational Rose'. I have used this to round trip between Sequence Diagrams and Visual Basic Classes. I am also comfortable using the Microsoft Visual Studio Tools such as the Package and Deployment Wizard and SourceSafe.

Team Work
I work within a close team of ten Software Developers. Working daily on an integrated software project I feel I have considerably developed the skills required to work within a successful team.

Communications
I am in regular contact with senior members of the NBS Management Team who have ultimate control over the user requirements of the software. I feel that my excellent presentation and communication skills have been very beneficial within this respect.

Over my time as a PhD Student I wrote and presented four papers for I.T. / civil engineering conferences.

AWARDS AND POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY

ICI Prize for Engineering 1994
Part 1 Engineering exam results (1st out of 110 students)

ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) Prize 1995
Final Civil Engineering exam results (1st out of 23 students)

Vice President MCR (Postgraduate Common Room)
1996/97 Hatfield College, Durham
My duties included helping to organise activities for the postgraduate students already within the college and making the new students feel welcome. I also represented the postgraduate requirements at meetings with undergraduate and senior college members.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS AND INTERESTS

I spend a lot of my spare time playing and coaching football. I currently play non-league football for Willington Town, a successful team in the Northern League. I have previously played for Durham City, Brandon United and Ferryhill Athletic.

I coach the Durham City Ladies football team. My duties include being in charge of the management and selection of the team throughout the season. Striking the right balance between enjoyment and success within the team has been a challenge that has been very satisfying. I have been active in obtaining money from three sponsors for training equipment, two sets of strips and pitch hire.
