Within this example The Beatles logo has now been allocated a transparent colour. This effect is not achieved through any HTML code - it is a feature of a GIF picture file. Within any good paint shop package (i.e. Paintshop Pro or Microsoft Photo Editor) this option will be given. All you have to do is click on the colour that is to be transparent.
