Durham knew that this was
possibly their biggest test of the season against a very
competent Gretna team. The home defence dealt with the
vistor's attacks without being too stretched in the first
half. Chances were at a minimal at the other end of the
pitch however, Vicky Collier came closest for Durham when
she nearly headed in a Magda Carr cross.
Gretna upped their game in
the second half and Durham were forced to defend deeper in
an attempt to get a result. After hitting the crossbar and
forcing a
couple of great saves from City 'keeper Kirtlain, Gretna
eventually got their breakthrough. In quick succession
Rushworth and Edmonson scored for the visitors to make it
2-0 with 10 minutes to go.
With five minutes left Durham
were given a life line when Nicola Sebastinelly came up from
right back to strike a sweet shot into the corner of the
goal.
In the dying
seconds Amanda Smith could have pinched a point for Durham,
but her shot was cleared off the line leaving the final
score 2-1 to Gretna.
