Durham started the game
well defending into the strong wind. Chances were kept to a
minimum with some excellent battling from City.
In a ten minute spell
before half time the game opened up. Durham City took the
lead when Emma Leggett played Helen Richardson
through on goal, Richardson beat two players before sliding
in bravely to make the score 1-0. Darlington were soon level
when Lawrence struck a well taken free kick past the
helpless 'keeper Lisa Marley.
City stole an unlikely lead
just before half time when captain Julie Campbell
received the ball on the edge of the penalty area. Campbell
turned and chipped the Darlington 'keeper to restore
Durham's lead.

Unfortunately for Durham they
could not hold on to the lead in the second half despite
having the wind at their backs. Early
in the second half Leach scored an excellent solo goal for
Darlington to draw the scores level.
Durham then looked more
like the team to score the winner and Helen Richardson and
Amanda Smith both came close having chances with only the
Darlington 'keeper to beat. But luck was not on City's side
when five minutes from time the referee gave the home side a
penalty for handball. Lawrence converted the kick to give
Darlington a 3-2 victory.
