Durham
took a four goal lead into the second leg of the 2nd Division
Cup Quarter Final Match against Newton Aycliffe. The match
went ahead after a pitch inspection on the morning.
Smith - Good Runs
|
The game was definitely a
'game of two halves' with Durham racing to a 3-0 lead within
the first 30 minutes. The first goal came after Gemma
Charlton had been brought down in the box. Claire Turner
scored the resulting penalty. Amanda Smith was making some
great runs down the right and Helen Richardson
converted one of Smith's crosses to make it 2-0. Richardson
quickly got her second when she blasted home a cross from
the left this time from Magda Carr.
Just before half time
Durham's Julie Campbell gave away a penalty with a clumsy
challenge. However, Durham were let off when the penalty was
shot wide of the goal.
George - Woman of the Match
|
The second half was an open
game with chances falling to both teams. Sarah Alexander
gave Newton Aycliffe hope of something from the game when she converted a free kick
from distance. With less than ten minutes left Nicky
Duckling then brought the score to 3-2. Durham
suddenly found themselves defending frantically for the
remainder of the match but had to settle for a draw when Kim
O'Connor scored a great goal from outside the box with the
last kick of the game.
Durham progress to the Semi
Final of the Cup where they must play Penrith over two legs.
Newton Aycliffe must play a one match play off with Horden
to decide who entertains Saltburn in the other Semi
Final.
