Durham
City Ladies went down 3-1 to Billingham in the Northen
League 1st Division.
Richardson - Early goal
|
The match started badly for
Durham when a mix up between defence and goalkeeper
resulted in an own goal. However, to Durham's credit they
pulled themselves back into the game when Richardson latched
onto Charlton's through ball and made no mistake to level
the score at 1-1.
Durham then had a good
spell competing with Billingham, who were last season's
league champions. Unfortunately for the visitors, just
before half time the home side scored two goals through set
pieces Dinsdale scored direct from a free kick before another
mix up in the Durham defence saw a well struck Huntington corner
end up in the back of the net.
Campbell - WOM
|
The second half was not as
exciting as the first as the hot weather took its toll on
the girls. City's Julie Campbell kept battling in midfield
to earn the woman of the match award and credit must be
given to Tracy Symons and Nicola Sebastinelly who limited
the quick Billingham forwards to only a handful half
chances. Unfortunately for Durham they could not reduce the
deficit and the game ended 3-1.
City Manager Stephen Hamil
was upbeat about the performance. "But for the
restructuring of the Womens' leagues Billingham can consider
themselves unfortunate not to be in the Northern Combination
League this year competing against the likes of Manchester
and Liverpool. I am proud of the way our relatively
inexperienced Durham team competed against the team who are
maybe the strongest in the league".
Durham Ladies face another
tough test next week when they face Darlington at home. The
match will kick off at 2pm on Sunday 2nd September at Laurel
Avenue Primary School just off Sherburn Road.
